Phase 1: RealWorld Design

The RealWorld Challenge is designed for high-school-aged students.  Once this challenge is completed, teachers/coaches of these students are encouraged to submit their students' best RealWorld project solutions online. Submitted projects will be featured in the Gallery of Student Designs on the RealWorld-InWorld website and students will receive recognition for their work.

To move to the InWorld Challenge, teachers/coaches must submit students' final solutions by January 15, 2011 (new deadline).  During the InWorld Challenge, teams compete for scholarships and technology awards.

Online Science Notebooks:

Teams are encouraged to use an online science notebook for their work throughout BOTH the RealWorld and InWorld challenges. Suggestions and support for these online tools are included in the RealWorld Resources.

Phase 2: InWorld Design

College students, who act as team leaders, select the team of high-school-aged students they will lead.  Professional engineers and scientists will be available to answer questions for each InWorld team.

In the virtual world setting, each newly formed team uses 21st Century tools and the InWorld Resources to refine designs and to create 3D models of the Webb telescope.

All participating college team leaders will receive recognition for their work. Participation in Phase 2 is limited to U.S. citizens.

Five InWorld teams will be chosen to participate in a final SYNCHRONOUS EDUCATION FORUM 3:30 - 5:30 PM ET, April 14, 2011.

The highest scoring team will earn scholarships and technology awards.
