High School Teachers

Phase 1:
RealWorld Design

RealWorld design (Phase 1) can be integrated into your curriculum or used as a stand-alone project.

Phase 2:
InWorld Design

The InWorld challenge (Phase 2) is for a smaller group of highly-motivated students who have completed the RealWorld design (Phase 1). You will continue to coach your student teams with the help of college student team leaders.

Once you register, you will have access to:

  • Educational Resources
    • RealWorld Design
    • InWorld Design
  • Online Tutorials
    • Design Process
    • Working in a Virtual World

Phase 1: RealWorld Design

Using the RealWorld Resources and working face-to-face, high-school-aged students and teachers/coaches brainstorm, design, build, test, and share ideas to solve one of two design problems related to the James Webb Space Telescope. This work may supplement standards-based curriculum and can be used to reinforce or introduce science and math content.

Once the RealWorld Challenge is completed, teachers/coaches are encouraged to submit their students' best RealWorld project solutions online through the Advanced Registration. Submitted projects will be featured in the Gallery of Student Designs on the RealWorld-InWorld website and teams will receive recognition for their work.

To move to the InWorld Challenge, project solutions must be submitted by January 15, 2011 (new deadline).  During the InWorld Challenge, teams compete for scholarships and technology awards.

Online Science Notebooks:

Teams are encouraged to use an online science notebook for their work. Suggestions and support for these online tools are included in the RealWorld Resources.

Phase 2: InWorld Design

Participating college students, who act as team leaders, build InWorld teams by selecting from registered teams and their teachers/coaches. Professional engineers and scientists are available to answer questions for each InWorld team.

In the virtual world setting, each newly formed team uses 21st Century tools and the InWorld Resources to refine designs and to create 3D models of the Webb telescope.

Participation in Phase 2 is limited to U.S. citizens.
